Stronger Together: Building the Future of EAL Literacy was the theme for the National Settlement Coordination Meeting – Language Literacy, held in Toronto on February 24 to 25, 2026. Bringing people together from across the county both online and in person. The two days were filled with opportunities for a deep dive with colleagues that sparked new ideas for making our literacy programs more consistent and effective.

Day one started with presentations to provide a context for considering language literacy landscape in Canada. Karen Lui, Director Settlement Coordination for IRCC and Dean Ruffilli, Assistance Director, Settlement Policy for IRCC focused on National directions for Literacy Language Training, maximizing Language and Settlement Outcomes for Literacy clients and strengthening data quality for evidence- driven programming. This was followed a Keynote presentation: Adult ELS Literacy Education: Aligning Practice and Programs with Learner Needs presented by Setsu Kawahara and Vanessa Lent who explored the unique learning profiles of adult literacy learners and the implications for program design and learner success. Their presentation highlighted details from their research report: Evaluation of the use of PBLA with Literacy Learners Research.
