Supporting LINC 4+ Clients: Strategies from the Field

The ending of the Stage II classes creates a change in the learning landscape for LINC 4+ learners that requires attention to the transitions that learners are facing. When change comes, two common fears for learners are: “Can I manage this?” and “What will my life be like in the future?”. Successful transition planning takes these fears into account and recognizes that transitions can be a zone of discomfort as learners juggle concerns about identity, responsibility, and uncertainty all at once. 

Timely and targeted support can have a positive influence on a client’s journey through the transition. Adopting a holistic, trauma informed approach that includes attention to goal setting, learning pathways, mental health support, access to settlement services, and mentorship that empowers can lead to success. Providing consistent routines can prevent overwhelming learners with too many demands. 

LINC leadership, administrative, settlement and instructional staff play a key role in creating stability during periods of change. Here is a list of strategies to consider when working with clients through transition: 

  • Normalize the range of feelings learners experience as an understandable part of the transition process 
  • Prioritize self-care routines including rest, physical activity, unplug, spend time with friends and family  
  • Encourage learners to identify their strengths and past successes in managing transitions 
  • Bring attention to short term coping strategies to reduce overwhelming feelings before goal setting 
  • Focus on agency and choice in goal setting and invite learners to revisit goals from time to time 
  • Advocate for being flexible to adapt to change with new realities that emerge 
  • Foster connection with friends, family and building other support systems 
  • Promote opportunities to learn about community resources  
  • Use plain language to enhance understanding about available resources 
  • Celebrate successes and achievements 

Supporting adults through transitions requires patience, flexibility, and compassion. Through listening with care, explaining options clearly, and meeting learners where they are – you help reduce confusion and can make a meaningful difference.
