This year September 8th marks International Literacy Day and each year in British Columbia, September marks Literacy Month to bring attention to the importance of literacy for all. Thank you to LINC teachers, Classroom Assistants, Digital Navigators and Volunteers who support literacy work in LINC programs across BC/Yukon throughout the year—your work changes lives in meaningful ways!
Literacy is critical for health, safety, managing personal finances, understanding rights and responsibilities, digital inclusion, employment, civic engagement and community participation and so much more. Literacy is liberating and has a ripple effect in the lives of literacy learners, their family, friends, community and workplaces. In the text-mediated and digital world today, literacy skills provide a foundation that empowers learners to engage in community in a variety of essential ways.
This resource list highlights a range of specialized literacy resources to strengthen literacy work across the BC/Yukon region:
- An Orientation to ESL for ALL – The CCLB offers a free 20-hour online asynchronous training course to support instructors working with learners with literacy needs. For instructors who are new to LINC, or new to working with adult literacy learners, this free training offers a foundation for facilitating strong adult literacy learning. https://www.language.ca/workshopstraining/an-orientation-to-esl-for-all/
- Archway Literacy Resources on TUTELA – Special thanks to the Archway team who have curated a collection of 28 targeted literacy lessons for a range of topics in the LINC classroom. You can locate theses resources through a search in the “Collection” feature on TUTELA. Use the terms “Archway Literacy Resources” and you will be directed to the collection.

- CLB Literacy Diagnostic Tasks is a valuable resource from CCLB for both LINC teachers, and Classroom Assistants to inform instructional planning and delivery The literacy diagnostic tasks from 1 to 10 can be used to determine the degree to which learners can complete foundational learning tasks in specific strands of ability, so that literacy learners are supported well to progress in LINC. - TUTELA “Literacy – Lesson plans, Module plans, assessment tools and templates”. The “Collections” feature within TUTELA. TUTELA can help to target search for specific topic areas and help ease teacher workload. Within the TUTELA Collections there is a collection titled “Literacy – Lesson plans, Module plans, assessment tools and templates” with over 100 different literacy aimed resources.
- TUTELA Webinar – Teaching Lower-Level Learners – Event 49122. For self-directed PD, this TUTELA webinar offers general tips/best practices for teaching lower level/literacy learners with good reminders, refreshers and tips that are practical for the LINC classroom.
